Poinsettias Are the Number One Christmas Flower

When people think about Christmas the first thing that comes to mind is of course the Christmas tree, but after a minute they start to think about one of the most popular flowers of all time, the poinsettia. Poinsettias have become a real staple of Christmas over the years and although they were originally native to Mexico, they are now grown in all fifty states. It seems like consumers just cannot get enough of these wonderful potted plants around the holiday season. In fact, there is more the 220 million dollars worth of poinsettias sold every year over a six-week span.

Although there are numerous amounts of other flowers used to make up some of the elegant Christmas flower arrangements, the poinsettia has made its way into the homes of millions and even landed its own day of recognition. That is right, December 12 has been declared National Poinsettia Day and the sales do not end there, they continue right through the rest of the month of December.

Contrary to popular belief, the poinsettia is not a poisonous plant, but the milky sap that it produces tends to irritate some people’s skin. Another thing that many people seem to be misinformed about is the fact that the poinsettia is not a flowering plant at all, but a shrubbery that can grow up to ten feet tall if left alone, and also that the beautiful red, white, or pink colors are not part of a flower, but are modified leaves. There is no actual blossom on the poinsettia, but people have chosen to call these areas of color blossoms.

Anybody who has purchased Christmas flowers before knows that they can get a little pricey at times, especially depending on the amount of different flowers that are in the arrangement and the actual size. However, when it comes to pricing a poinsettia, the price is a reflection of how many blossoms the plant has, as well as the overall quality and health of the plant.

One of the reasons that poinsettias are purchased more often than some of the more elegant arrangements in places like hotels and corporate offices is due to their ability to act as an investment plant. They do not require very much maintenance and they last throughout the entire holiday season instead of a week or so like fresh cut flowers. Therefore, businesses are able to bring the holiday spirit into their business or office without having to fork out a fortune every couple of days when the flowers begin to wilt. It is believed that brining in the holiday cheer can actually boost employee moral because it is hard to resist the joy that the holidays bring to people.
